                                    36 Safety and SuppliesTRAVELING WITH OXYGENBe very careful when traveling with oxygen.%u2022 No smoking in the car.%u2022 Never put the oxygen into a hot vehicle.%u2022 Never put the oxygen in the trunk.%u2022 Secure the oxygen to avoid rolling or banging. For example: you could secure it with the seatbelt in the adjacent seat.%u2022 Make sure there is air movement in the vehicle.%u2022 Always take the most direct route.%u2022 Try to avoid heavy traffic.%u2022 When you arrive, remove the oxygen from your vehicle right away. Never leave it in a vehicle %u2013 it could get hot from the sun.FIRE SAFETYSmoke detectors should be in working order in all appropriate areas:%u2022 Smoke detectors should be placed on each level of the home, especially near kitchens and bedrooms.%u2022 Check the detectors periodically to make sure they are still working. Change the batteries at the start of daylight savings time.%u2022 Some fire departments will help individuals on restricted incomes obtain smoke detectors.Map out an emergency exit plan in case of fire:%u2022 It is important that every member of the household know how to exit the house in case of fire.%u2022 Select two emergency exits in case one is blocked and pick a spot outside the home where members of the household should meet.%u2022 Review the plan regularly with family members. Place emergency fire, ambulance, police, and poison control numbers next to the phone.If members of the household smoke, be aware of where and when:%u2022 Be certain that members of the household don%u2019t smoke if tired, drowsy or in bed.%u2022 Keep ashtrays and smoking materials away from the bed.Be extra cautious when cooking:%u2022 Don%u2019t leave food unattended on the stove, particularly if called to assist a family member. You could become so involved that you could forget that you left food cooking.%u2022 Extended periods of caregiving tend to leave one sleep-deprived, so never leave pans on the stove or food in the oven while you decide to sit down and relax for %u201cjust a minute.%u201d You could very easily doze off and cause a fire.%u2022 Have a home fire extinguisher nearby.
